The Chopsticks Etiquette Police

by Katia on May 20, 2010

Now I am no Emily Post and I’m certain that my table manners would cause me great shame in some circles. However, I was a bit surprised to find myself scandalized by a friend’s table manners.

While dining at a Japanese restaurant in Madrid he left his chopsticks sticking straight up and down in his bowl as he reached for his glass of water. “You shouldn’t do that with the chopsticks!” I remember whispering to him.

“When did I turn into the etiquette police?” I later wondered. I’m not Japanese and we weren’t in Japan, so why did I even care? I guess having some Japan-obsessed friends does have its inevitable side effects…
